Why I don't think desalination is a smart or sustainable solution to our fresh water issues
Desalination seems the perfect solution right? All we have to do is boil seawater and then presto! drinkable water! Well almost but not quite....
Not only does this require A LOT of energy (which mostly comes from fossil fuels) and create toxic waste products, it also threatens marine life and sets an irresponsible expectation for consumer of limitless water supplies thus reducing the need to improve water efficiency. In addition to this, distilled water has very low nutritional content as it does not have the same mineral content as fresh water: While I understand that in some areas there is only so much that can be done to avoid desalination due to reduced rainfall, I advocate catching rainwater; reusing greywater and limiting your use of bottled drinks. Another thing to consider is that a lot of industries are polluting fresh water and should not be supported. One in particular is the extraction of petroleum from tar sands but that's a whole other post.
I'd like to hear your thoughts.....
